Five old stagers met at the start in Laverton later to be joined by one other at the morning tea venue in Meredith. After a chat and for some, a hot coffee and briefing from Ed we were off on time. A short run to Werribee down the Princes highway, through the town and then out west past the Ford proving ground and over to Anakie Junction before riding up the hilly winding road through the Steiglitz Historic Park (great riding along here) and on to the Meredith café/store and PO for morning tea. Always good value here and run by pleasant proprietors. Here we were joined by Burger Drake on his lovely Vincent.
Again on great riding roads we then made our way up north via Durdidwarrah, Mnt Wallace, Bungal, Mnt Egerton then a meander across near Ballan and up to Spargo Creek on the Daylesford road. It was between Spargo Creek and Bolwarrah that the weather turned quite dark and we copped a shower of rain but hardly enough to worry us and soon enough the skies cleared as we rode into the Gordon café for lunch. Again always a pleasant affair here and as I’ve mentioned before they make the best tasting sausage rolls your likely to find. After lunch it was homeward bound via Ballan and Greendale before a final blast down the Ballarat freeway. A short farewell regroup and then we split up near the turn off for the Western Ring Road at Deer Park after yet another well organized and enjoyable mid week run. Thanks Ed.
Postscript:
On our stop at Meredith I had taken a picture of Tony Border with his very nice BMW R 100 RS and I then asked him about the BM’s history. Tony was kind enough to email me its history along with some of his travelling experiences with this bike. Tony’s article about his BM is quite enjoyable and extensive enough for inserting in Sprocket as a separate story on its own. That I have done so please enjoy it elsewhere in this issue. Thanks Tony.
